We’re almost at the halfway point of the NFL season but it’s not too early to tell which teams should shop for a new starting QB for next season. Unfortunately the upcoming NFL Draft is a bad draft for QB’s therefore some teams will have to go the veteran retread route or keep what they have. An NFL coach’s life isn’t good without a QB, a coach without a decent starting QB gets fired a lot quicker than coaches that have one.
Need a new starting QB ASAP
Carolina Panthers – the Sam Darnold experiment failed
Denver Broncos – it’s amazing how many times John Elway has failed to get this position right
Detroit Lions – thank the Rams for the draft picks, not Goff
Houston Texans – entire organization is a dumpster fire
Miami Dolphins – Deshaun Watson can mask the Dolphins secondary issues
NY Giants – time to rebuild this rebuild
Philadelphia Eagles – give the Eagles credit for trying, but Jalen Hurts is an NFL backup at best
Pittsburgh Steelers – priority #1 should be to get Aaron Rodgers to play with these receivers
Washington Football Team – Taylor Heinicke couldn’t put up points against the Chiefs defense
These teams have a young QB and it’s too early to tell (but I give my 2 cents)
Chicago Bears – there’s no middle ground, either you like Justin Fields or you don’t….I never did. If the 49ers lose to Fields who was drafted 8 spots after Trey Lance, sacked a league-high 22 times, has thrown 6 INT’s, only 2 TD’s, only completing 57.3 percent of his passes and as of the date of this writing has the lowest passer rating, 61.8 of any current NFL starter heading into Week 8….then San Francisco fans should officially get ready for next season.
Cincinnati Bengals – Joe Burrow and company just beat down the Baltimore Ravens, if Burrow can turn around the Bengals and make them consistent AFC contenders he should get a HOF vote
Jacksonville Jaguars – Trevor Lawrence has talent but HC Urban Meyer and GM Trent Baalke are the wildcards to his success and right now this roster is a mess
New England Patriots – Belichick doesn’t trust him yet but so far so good for rookie Mac Jones
New York Jets – Zach Wilson who as of the date of this writing has the second lowest passer rating, 63.5 of any current NFL starter heading into Week 8 was my #1 QB bust (slightly in front of Justin Fields) the moment he was drafted
Wait and see….
Indianapolis Colts – Carson Wentz has talent but doesn’t seem reliable, if I’m the Colts I’m looking for his successor just in case of injury or his play falls off a cliff
Las Vegas Raiders – I’ve always said Derek Carr is the most underrated QB in the NFL, but a lot of Raiders fans want him gone and I never understood it
New Orleans Saints – I don’t think Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill are long-term answers at QB for any NFL team
Has a succession plan at QB
San Francisco 49ers – If the 49ers are losing games, Trey Lance should be starting now to get live-game reps and mistakes out of the way now. Offense doesn’t look dynamic with Jimmy Garoppolo under center. If the 49ers lose to the Bears, start Trey Lance the rest of the season.
Doesn’t have a succession plan at QB but needs one
Atlanta Falcons – Matt Ryan’s ridiculous contract makes him close to impossible to trade or cut. His contract expires in a couple of years and has salary cap hits of $48.6 million in 2022 and $43.6 million in 2023. The Falcons need to groom Matt Ryan’s replacement next season.
