REGULAR SEASON OBSERVATIONS AFTER 2 WEEKS…

2 weeks of the NFL season has come and gone.   Some teams are what we thought they were, others aren’t and some we still don’t know what to make of them yet.  Each team still has 15 more games to go but here are my thoughts after 2 weeks…

Arizona Cardinals – predicted to come in last place in the NFC West the Cardinals need to win as many games as they can that aren’t within the division.  I hear a lot of MVP talk right now for Kyler Murray but playing below average defenses in the Tennessee Titans and Minnesota Vikings don’t make you an MVP.  Shred the defenses in the NFC West and he’ll have my vote.

Atlanta Falcons – from a betting perspective, if the Falcons are playing a good defense like the Eagles fade them. If the Falcons are playing a good offense like Tampa Bay fade them.  If the Falcons are playing an NFL team fade them.

Baltimore Ravens – Lamar Jackson will have to do everything on offense for this team to win games.  Will he wear down as the season progresses…….

Buffalo Bills – the Bills blew it against the Steelers but Josh Allen continues to torch Robert Flores and the Miami Dolphins defense.  I still expect a regression from Josh Allen this year as opposed to his statistics last year.

Carolina Panthers – this is the most underrated coaching staff in the NFL.  In 2 years this team will be a major contender in the NFC.  Sam Darnold escapes the Jets and his completion percentage has increased and he makes less mistakes.

Chicago Bears – it doesn’t matter who plays QB for this team because the QB’s aren’t good and the team isn’t good.  Any GM that drafts QB Mitch Trubisky, a 5th or 6th round back-up talent at #3 overall in the NFL draft shouldn’t be a GM. On top of this the Bears have no cap space which is puzzling because they have holes all over the roster.  If you don’t have money to pay additional players the assumption is you already have a lot of good players which they don’t.  Another reason Ryan Pace shouldn’t be a GM.

Cincinnati Bengals  – same ol’ story for the Bengals, they can’t protect Joe Burrow he’s been sacked 9 times in 2 games and that’s after playing the Vikings and Bears defenses.  They still have to play the defenses in their division twice.

Cleveland Browns – the formula for the Browns to win is give the ball to Nick Chubb.  As long as this happens and he gets yards the Browns will be successful because Baker won’t have to throw much and when he does throw it will be in favorable situations.  The injury to Jarvis Landry will hurt the offense though.

Dallas Cowboys – the Cowboys win against the Chargers was the first time since 2018 the Cowboys won a regular season game without scoring at least 30 points.  Tony Pollard is better than Zeke right now.  I saw the decline in Zeke a couple of years ago and dropped him in my fantasy football keeper league.  Is it crazy to think by the end of the season backup RB Tony Pollard is better than Ezekiel Elliott ?  The cap hit the Cowboys are taking for Zeke this year, next year and years after is equivalent to a bad baseball contract.  In addition the Cowboys have a LB named Jaylon Smith making starter/star money…..and he doesn’t start !  Rookie Micah Parsons starts in his place.

Denver Broncos – Teddy is steady.

Detroit Lions – Jared Goff can’t play from behind and expect to win games so the Lions will lose a lot of games this season.  They played a decent 2nd half against the 49ers when Kyle Shanahan took out defensive starters and played a decent 1st half against the Packers but they still haven’t put together a full game yet.

Green Bay Packers – this is a steady good team that wins games the same way all of the time by Aaron Rodgers making throws and the receivers catching his passes.   The Packers offense or defense won’t impose their will on a team, they aren’t physical on either side of the ball, they don’t have a pass rush….Jameis Winston and Jared Goff had all day to throw and after wins Aaron Rodgers will say something negative the media is doing though he provides all of the material for the media by talking so much.

Houston Texans – the Texans have been competitive with Tyrod Taylor at QB.  The problem is Tyrod Taylor is no longer the QB, Davis Mills is.

Kansas City Chiefs – the Chiefs can score on anybody but after 2 weeks it looks like it’s not hard to run on their defense.  The Chiefs fixed their offensive line in the off-season they might need to fix their run defense in-season.

Indianapolis Colts – Carson Wentz is still turning the ball over, this could be his last year as a regular starting QB in the NFL if he doesn’t get it together.

Las Vegas Raiders – I’ve liked Derek Carr more than most Raider fans, I’ve said multiple times to any Raider fan willing to listen that he is the most underrated QB in the NFL.  The Raiders have no running game and the 2nd worst offensive line in terms of rushing in the NFL so it’s all on Derek Carr to make things happen and right now he’s playing big-time football for the Raiders.  Without him this is an 0-2 team.

Los Angeles Chargers – gave away the game against the Cowboys by racking up 12 penalties.  It seems like no matter who’s the head coach the Chargers consistently beat themselves.  Most penalized team in the NFL after 2 weeks.

Los Angeles Rams – the offense definitely has more juice and big-play ability with Matt Stafford under center.  The Rams didn’t play great against the Colts but they got the job done.

Jacksonville Jaguars – It’s going to be a long season and long rebuild for Urban Meyer…if he stays long enough.  The guys Urban brought in to run his offense Darrell Bevell and Brian Schottenheimer aren’t good offensive coaches.

Miami Dolphins – If the game against the Buffalo Bills doesn’t prove to Dolphin fans that Tua isn’t the one then nothing will.  The Dolphins will face Josh Allen twice a year and the QB position is holding this team back from their potential or at least competing with the Buffalo Bills.   So far the Dolphins offense – 30th in yards, 31st in points in the NFL.

Minnesota Vikings – this team is 0-2 but could very well have stolen these games and be 2-0.  If mistakes and missed opportunities continue Mike Zimmer will be the fall guy and will get fired.

New England Patriots – An argument could be made this team should be 2-0.  The Patriots won’t light up the scoreboard but with their defense they won’t need to.  This is the perfect team for Mac Jones because he doesn’t have to carry this team just like when he was at Alabama.  In addition Bill Belichick and Nick Saban are very good friends.

New Orleans Saints – the game against the Packers was the opposite of the game against the Panthers.  Which is the real Saints team…..

New York Jets – Zach Wilson threw 3 INT’s in his first 5 attempts against the Patriots.  I knew it’s possible that an NFL QB could do this I just didn’t think someone would actually do it.  Read my thoughts below on Zach Wilson and the other QB’s drafted this year in the 1st round.

DID THE 49ERS MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION BY SELECTING TREY LANCE OVER THE OTHER QUARTERBACKS

New York Giants – 0-2 for the 5th straight year, offensive line issues, QB issues, coaching issues, blew the game against the Washington Football Team…just too many issues and questions with the Giants.  This feels like the rebuild is a failure and that they need to rebuild the rebuild.

Philadelphia Eagles – the defensive front 7 for the Eagles is legit, but the offense needs work.  Jalen Hurts has this season to prove he’s a capable NFL starting QB.  Currently he’s 2-4 as a starter in the NFL. I give the Eagles credit for seeing issues with Carson Wentz and drafting Hurts in the 2nd round but the Eagles need to bring in another QB too.

Pittsburgh Steelers – I said before the season  the Steelers are fooling themselves if they think Najee Harris will fix their run game.  What will fix their run game is new offensive lineman. The Steelers were 32nd (last) in rushing last year, this year they’re 31st, that’s not progress.  Ben Roethlisberger looked old the end of last season.  This season he looks and plays older.

San Francisco 49ers –  QB carousel, RB injuries and rotating CB’s.  Seems like last year all over again with injuries to start the season.  The 49ers did the right thing by not playing Trey Lance against the Eagles.  You don’t want a rookie QB facing that defensive front 7 the second game of his career.

Seattle Seahawks – as usual Russell Wilson makes this team go.  Not the greatest collection of talent on offense but Russell makes it work.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers – offense is still humming but this is expected when Tom Brady is the captain of the ship, he will not allow the offense to be complacent.  On the other hand the defense will give up yards and points in the passing game.

Tennessee Titans – despite the addition of Julio Jones this team will go as far as Derrick Henry takes them.

Washington Football – easily could be 0-2, the defensive line feasted on bad QB’s last season. Fast forward to this season the d-line has had no impact.  Justin Herbert had his way with this defense and they made Daniel Jones look like a somewhat competent NFL QB. In addition I’m not a fan of Taylor Heinicke.  I bet the Washington Football Team to win this division before the season started, I hedged this bet immediately after the Giants game was over.
